San-Mai Knife by Master Saryal Bilyukin — A Fusion of Craft and Ancient Art
This extraordinary blade is hand-forged by master blacksmith Saryal Bilyukin in the San-Mai tradition, with nickel added for enhanced contrast and corrosion resistance. The blade’s core features a composition comparable to O1 (T31507) tool steel, providing excellent edge retention and durability. True to his reputation, Bilyukin brings each piece to life with unique and organic Damascus patterns, the result of his deep mastery and artistic vision.
The handle is a remarkable centerpiece, made from mammoth bone bearing ancient cave paintings originating from the middle course of the Lena River. These millennia-old carvings depict hunting scenes, animals, and a shaman’s hand drum, evoking the spiritual and cultural heritage of the region. Complementing this historical element are stabilized birch burl inserts, set both longitudinally and crosswise, adding strength and visual depth.
The custom sheath is crafted from wet-molded natural leather, lined with an insert of dried Siberian birch to protect the blade and maintain form. It is entirely hand-stitched with waxed thread, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship. On the sheath’s sides, the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Sakha is proudly stamped, alongside the maker’s mark, signifying origin, pride, and quality.
This knife is more than a cutting tool—it's a convergence of metallurgy, ancient art, and Yakutian tradition, crafted to be both functional and profoundly meaningful.
